Continuous, pilot-scale production of carbon fiber from a textile grade PAN polymer

چکیده
Presented here is an investigation into the successful wet spinning and carbonization of a low-cost textile grade (TG-PAN) polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer blended with more traditional carbon fiber (CF-PAN) precursor. Both were performed using continuous pilot scale facilities directly analogous to larger industrial processes which provide validation for further scale-up. The precursor fibers (TG-CF) showed consistently uniform cross-sections benchmark CF PAN exhibiting mechanical properties similar commercially available fiber. Despite TG-PAN only failing adequately stabilize, CF-PAN produced are high quality exhibit properties. corresponding TG-CF containing 70 wt% has tensile strength 2.2 GPa, modulus 210 GPa 1% elongation failure. Although less than fiber, affirm that this approach potential develop scalable suitable range important applications.

A Pilot Scale Batch Pan
The existing small scale batch pans used for research in the South African sugar industry have limited capabilities for simulating industrial operations. In particular, these pans have been designed and used primarily for determining equilibrium conditions and have not been designed to achieve the rates of crystallization which are achieved in full scale pans. Operating an existing laboratory s...
متن کاملBuckling Behavior of Semi-scale Steel Tank with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Ring Subjected to Lateral Uniform Pressure Loading
Research on increasing the buckling strength of tanks carrying fluid and also cylindrical shells of thin-walled steel in civil engineering and mechanics is important. This is due to the widespread use of these structures in the industry. Due to the low thickness of the body and also due to the pressure forces entering these tanks, these structures are exposed to lateral buckling. In this resear...

A general approach to simulate the mechanical behavior of textile materials by taking into account all their constitutive elementary fibers and contacts between them is presented in this paper. A finite element code, based on an implicit solver, is develop to model samples of woven fabrics as assemblies of beams submitted to large displacements and developing contact-friction interactions betwe...
متن کاملThermal Properties of Hybrid Carbon Nanotube/Carbon Fiber Polymer Composites
Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites possess many advantages for aircraft structures over conventional aluminum alloys: light weight, higher strengthand stiffness-to-weight ratio, and low life-cycle maintenance costs. However, the relatively low thermal and electrical conductivities of CFRP composites are deficient in providing structural safety under certain operational conditions...
متن کاملProduction of Banana Fiber Yarns for Technical Textile Reinforced Composites
Natural fibers have been used as an alternative to synthetic ones for their greener character; banana fibers have the advantage of coming from an agricultural residue. Fibers have been extracted by mechanical means from banana tree pseudostems, as a strategy to valorize banana crops residues. To increase the mechanical properties of the composite, technical textiles can be used as reinforcement...
